Time and time again, I’ll often set myself resolutions that aren’t practical for my situation nor realistic, so this year, I took a bit of time to really think things through; looking back at past resolutions and tweaking them to fit the here and now. In general my resolutions stay quite similar year in, year out so this year rather than bombard my brain with lots all at once, I’m trying to keep them pretty simple, lifestyle changes that may take time to really resolve themselves, but doesn’t involve a huge amount of stress for myself – which actually fits in my real goal for this year, and that’s to look after myself better.
My 2017 Resolutions/Goals:
Finish my University Degree – it’s sort of self-explanitory, but for the past three years I’ve been in my final year of University. Yes, three years. There’s been a lot of extenuating circumstances both personally (yay bad mental health) and in my family which have build a lot of barriers, but I’m finally in my final semester with the hopes of graduating at some point this year, whether that be July or November. It’s going to involve a lot of work, but my main dissertation is to set up my own fashion magazine and I really can’t wait to see the final result!
Try to invest more in social media – When it comes to Twitter and Instagram, I must spend hours on end every time just refreshing and browsing and not really engaging. So this year I really want to make my time a lot more productive by talking more on Twitter and uploading daily over on Instagram. I’m really enjoying using Instagram at the minute and this year I’d love to reach 5,000 followers!
Do one thing out of my comfort zone every day – This is going to be a tricky one for me, but after years of battling an anxiety disorder, my comfort zone at present is pretty restricted. I can struggle to leave the house on my own quite often which I know is really unhealthy so I’d love for 2017 to be the year I start talking back to my negative thoughts and do things that feel a little uncomfortable to me – whether that’s spending more time out of the house on my own or saying yes to more opportunities.
Be a little more selfish and look after myself more – Probably my most important of all, I need to learn how to be selfish this year. It sounds a bit crazy, but as a way of burying my head in the sand and avoiding my own problems, I’ll often take on someone else’s in order to ‘help’ them instead. Unfortunately someone very close to me has a long-term illness which can lead to a lot of distressing symptoms (seizures, fainting, irrational behaviour etc) that don’t have a fix, and I seem to have voluntarily taken on a carers role, and subsequently put my entire life on hold for the past couple of years, losing myself somewhere on the way. So that’s something I’d really like to change this year, I need to do more things for me; such as spending time with my friends and not cancelling plans just to please others.
– Visit a new city.
– Watch a new film at least once a week.
– Educate myself more – read up on topics I’m interested in, learn.
– Read 30 new books.
– Upgrade my camera.
– Start saving money aside every month.
– Make my first designer purchase.
Have you got any resolutions/goals for the next year? I’d love to hear them!
