Back To University: Wardrobe Essentials

For me, September has always been the month of fresh starts and the beginning of another year in education. If you follow me over on Twitter, you’ll know that this month I’m returning back to University after a two year leave of absence due to some mental health issues and personal issues at home making things super difficult. I’m nervous (being a newbie going into third year not knowing anyone is going to be a challenge!), but I’m also really excited to start afresh and of course, me being me, use it as an excuse to give my wardrobe a new lease of life. It can be all too easy to get a little spendy when that student loan appears in your bank account, but for me, it’s all about stocking up on some wardrobe essentials that I know will take me through the year. So, here are my essentials:
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Selection of Knitwear

!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p, cb; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e = doc.createElement(s); e.id = id; cb = new Date().getTime().toString(); p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js?cb=1473154726568?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

I’ll be staying at home for University, deciding to commute over to the campus each day. It’s quite a journey (it can be up to 3.5 hours of travelling a day) and with a campus located just around the corner from the sea front, knitwear is a total must for me. As a naturally very anxious person, I always find knitwear quite comforting, especially on those colder days – plus they’re great to just chuck over a pair of jeans and you’re good to go (you’ll notice a pattern here!). This season the high street are full of plenty of options, in a range of colours and styles, but for me this year it’s all about the ruffle detailing and embroidery. And if you’re not one for florals, then sassy motifs are a great alternative if you’re looking for something other than your bog standard sweatshirt.

Jeans

!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p, cb; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e = doc.createElement(s); e.id = id; cb = new Date().getTime().toString(); p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js?cb=1473154726568?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

Jeans are a must in anyone’s wardrobe, especially those of a students. If you’re unlucky enough to have early lectures (9am starts I’m looking at you pfft), then jeans will be your saviour! Buy a few in different washes and styles and they’ll go with anything, trust me. They don’t need washing after every wear (so there’ll hopefully always be a pair ready to go) and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Up until this past year, I’ve never been much of a jeans person but I must wear them at least 5 days a week now – especially cropped flares and culottes, I just love to pair them with a pair of converse for a laid back effortless look!

Comfy Shoes

!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p, cb; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e = doc.createElement(s); e.id = id; cb = new Date().getTime().toString(); p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js?cb=1473154726568?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

I definitely have my granny tendencies, but comfy shoes are vital in my opinion. Maybe it’s just me, but uncomfortable shoes on a long day are the absolute worst, right? Whilst I still always carry plasters with me just incase, I’m always on the hunt for stylish yet comfy shoes to wear to University. I’ve already mentioned my love for Converse, but for A/W I’m a huge fan of ankle boots too. If you’re looking for more of a staple piece, then you can never go wrong with a pointed pair of chelsea boots, or if you’re like me and want to make more of a statement, then the high street is full of printed boots this season – I wore my leopard print ones for the entirety of last A/W so I’m really excited to bring them back out!

Coats/Jackets

!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p, cb; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e = doc.createElement(s); e.id = id; cb = new Date().getTime().toString(); p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js?cb=1473154726568?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);
If I ever won the lottery and could get spendy with one type of clothing, it would be without a doubt coats and jackets. Screw shoes and bags, I’m a total coat person and nothing makes me more excited that when the A/W coats start appearing in the shops – it’s my favourite time of year. So for me, any excuse to buy a new coat! I’ve recently just picked up two biker jackets (which you’ll no doubt see in upcoming outfit posts) which are really handy for this transitional time, and I’m on the hunt for the perfect trench coat this season too that I can pair with a stripe tee for that parisian chic vibe. I’m a big advocate for good basics – i.e. black/grey/neutral colours which are a great blank canvas to pair with any of your outfits, but I love a good statement coat too. You’ll be surprised how much wear you’ll get out of it – the faux fur leopard print coat I picked up last year is now one of my staples, I love how I can wear the most plain of outfits so the coat does all of the talking!

Bags

!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p, cb; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e = doc.createElement(s); e.id = id; cb = new Date().getTime().toString(); p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js?cb=1473154726568?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

Life as a student involves a lot of studying, a lot of writing copious amounts of notes, and a whole lot of books – so having a decent University bag is pretty crucial. I’ve learnt the hard way that trying to cram loads into a smaller, cheaper bag never ends well (definitely had to hug a broken bag home on a number of occasions) so for me, practicality is key. I’m really loving backpacks this season, as they don’t leave you totally crippled with a bad back at the end of term and many fit all of the necessities. Or, if you’re someone who typically goes for smaller bags, then a canvas shopper is another great option!

Statement Accessories

!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p, cb; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e = doc.createElement(s); e.id = id; cb = new Date().getTime().toString(); p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js?cb=1473154726568?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

Chances are, as a student, you’ll be on a bit of a budget when it comes to spending money on fashion pieces. So, for me, I find chopping and changing statement accessories is a great way to update your wardrobe on a serious budget. There’s plenty of ways you can do this, but this season I’m especially loving fun pins (that look amazing on denim) and neckties. I may also be biased, but hats are a great wardrobe essential. Not only to they help make your outfit look a whole lot more put together (when in reality you only woke up 5 minutes before leaving the house) but they also cover up any bad hair days – especially when the weather isn’t so pretty!

    Great picks! And good luck with going into third year, I was in a similar position after taking a year out for similar reasons. I actually found it really fun starting again and meeting new people xx
